EU can gather support by raising its own taxes?

The out-of-touch approach to politics brought to the table by those who rabidly support the EU has been exposed once again in The Guardian.

Mary Kaldor, a leading academic on global governance, has argued that the EU can gain popularity by bringing in a "family of taxes at a European level that would allow the EU to develop a degree of autonomy ".

YI Chairman Michael Heaver said: "It is astounding that senior pro-EU academics seriously believe the EU would gain more popularity by becoming more autonomous and even more powerful.

"Ordinary people don't want the EU to have massive powers like the ability to raise taxes. That is why the EU Consitution was rejected in France and the Netherlands, why the Maastricht Treaty was originally rejected in Denmark and why the only country to have a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, Ireland, rejected it until the EU got heavy-handed.

"I do however support this lady's proposal for an elected EU President if we do have to remain in the EU, as this figure elected by the people would probably have a mandate to reign in the EU's powers massively, if not shut down the thing completely."
