Those who want open-door immigration are the extremists.
News that a draft government policy document attributed those who have concerns about immigration as harbouring racist views is disgraceful, but hardly surprising.
It is after all this Labour government which has ignored its own working class constituents concerns on the issue, allowing the vile BNP to gain some electoral traction. Traction that UKIP is determined to destroy by putting forward a robust solution to immigration worries based on space and not race.
The simple fact is Britain's membership of the European Union means we have an open-border with 26 other countries, including some poorer Eastern European countries. This has led to a huge traffic of immigration into Britain.
I would argue that these immigrants are overwhelmingly hard working and law abiding. The immigrants themselves are not the issue, it is the fact that as many as want to come can. During a time of economic difficulty where British people themselves are struggling for jobs, while many more sit lazily at home collecting benefits when they should be working, this naturally creates resentment.
We in Young Independence and UKIP simply want an immigration system akin to those in Australia or America. Those who wish to live and work here are very welcome, but only if their skills are required by the country and their is a job for them to come and do.
The government have acknowledged that immigration controls are necessary. They themselves have implemented a points-based system of immigration, but only for those wanting to come to Britain from outside of the European Union. Yes, sickeningly our government discriminates against those who wish to come and contribute to our country by where they come from.
The truth is, Britain requires an immigration system which is stern but fair. One that maintains Britain's sound tradition of being a nation proud to welcome newcomers. But at the same time, we must be able to have a government that knows who is coming into the country and has the power to choose who can live here and who can't.
It is those in Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats who believe in the EU's free movement of peoples, no matter what the economic impact or social problems that result. It is they that represent an extremist policy of open-borders and discrimination whilst UKIP represent a policy which would be viewed as a common sense approach to most reasonably-minded people.
