Pro Referendum Rally Report – Truro

The Cornwall Pro Referendum Rally event in Truro provided people with the opportunity to ‘cast their vote’ in a ballot box on Lemon Quay. The ballot slip asked the question:

‘Do you want a referendum on the new EU Constitutional Treaty?’

272 people voted Yes (98.5%) and 4 people voted No (1.5%) before the ballot slips ran out, partly due to the rain causing papers to stick together and rendering some unusable.

In addition, 298 people signed a petition calling on Gordon Brown to grant a referendum. Despite miserable weather, people were often queuing up to sign, even though there were five lists running simultaneously. This is clearly an issue about which the public feels strongly, many of them stopping to chat to the organisers and express their anger that they are not being given a say.

It was particularly encouraging to see young people stopping to discuss the issue and add their votes and signatures.
